Just a short notice: As you might have seen there is a small player in the bar on the right, this player includes the latest tracks submitted to the stripewaves soundcloud group.
Don’t get me wrong, I love music. But love is a complex thing. “Music” as a whole is a pretty big entity, the idea that i would love ALL music is just silly. It’s the same as anything, love is based off bias and interest. You will never love what doesn’t get you going. A universal acceptance of some string pulling is required before you can even thinking about mentioning the L word, and so it should be.
So, in a politically correct sense and the joyous “in my opinion” safety net that is the internet, I love the songs i have listed below. It’s not a flirtation , eyes across the bar thing either.
I’ll be doing a regular installment of basic bullshit followed be a list of awesome tunes. There is just too much good stuff out there to be able to get it all into mixes afterall.
With a name like Ricky Skullcrusha, it shouldn’t be a surprise that RSK’s take on Dubstep kicks like a mule on steroids. Staying busy pretty much from start to finish, his structure and production never feels lax, or phoned in. There is some serious thought going into this music that very much comes across in the finished product. Proud to plant his flag on the wobble side of Dubstep, his open mindedness to production and Dubstep in general is infectious.
I nabbed a few words from the man himself, and once again i will be pointing out some of the choicer cuts for your listening pleasure.
For the people who might not be familiar with you, could you give us a brief history of you and music?
“Me and music. Well it started ultimately, with a baseball bat that had a rubber band strung on it (my first instrument). Plucking away, and using my fingers to change the sound of the bassy gumband. I picked up the guitar at 13 and eventually became quite good at stringed instrument and percussion instruments as well, expanding and expanding my know how and joining several bands. I think ive always had a fascination with computers and technology (musical or no), at an age even younger than during the “bat-guitar era”. Eventually all of my techno-lust and rockstar persevierance converged at 17, when i started writing DnB. Fast forward 10 yrs of trial and error, honing my skills, until present day. Lots of practice, a genre switch in between as well, and you have your current person, Ricky Skullcrusha aka RSK.”
Why produce Dubstep specifically? What drew you to the genre?
“Dubstep. This is a tedious question. I think it was a feeling of jadedness that came from certain aspects of writing dnb that made it frustrating, coupled with the lack of interest by labelheads in anything i was doing, i switched to dubstep. All the production techniques i picked up writing at 170+, i was able to translate with great success at slower speeds. so the transition was pretty seamless: it was basically one day after a roomate had been pounding the sound into my head, (i thought it was rubbish at first) i loaded up my sequencer and just decided to give dubstep production a go. my initial results where pretty dope, so i just continued from there on out.”
How is your XENOANATOMYrelease doing and what have you been working on production wise lately?
“Im not too sure how my ep is doing at this moment but it did fairly well in sales at first (#1 on Juno.co.uk in August) but im sure its getting a few buys per week, which im happy with at my current status. its more important for someone like me to stay prolific and just keep writing and moving forward, than trying to look back at my sales of previous tracks and be a business man about it like “wheres my money?” ”
“As far as what im working on now, its mainly US born “Brostep” sound (other brostep artists include: Richie August, Claw, Hulk, Mark Instinct, Symbl, Dread Foxx and many more…), and trying to progress dubstep as quickly as possible. Keeping the momentum going and being persistent is key in not letting the phenomanon sputter out. Constant renewal of content and a strong base of creativity are critical as well. Dubstep is a kind of genre busting music that becomes more than just electronic music. its almost a culmination of all things musical in a way, the melting pot audio. It makes things exciting when you think of the possibilities and potential. But i think more importantly, we as the dubstep community try and spread a positive vibe, and openess to new people that shirks the hyper-elitism in most other genres. that will be our strength definetly.”
What have been rocking your speakers when you are not working on music?
“What have i been listening to? Vangelis, TC, Subfocus, Jack Beatz, Original Sin, The Talking Heads, Devo, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Primus, Ozzy, CKY, NoFX, Aesop Rock, Cool Kids, Wu-Tang, and anything 8-bit im a sucker for. As far as dubstep goes, most selections from Savory Audio, and Betamorph Recordings. im really feeling these producers: Eddie K, Giant, 16bit, 501, Datsik, Hulk, Doctor P, Mr. Curtamos, Hotmess, Rukkus & Roke, Fuzz2k, DJ Snipaz, G31, and Korea to name a few ppl to look out for! cheers!”
