So Soul Motive have a new showcase mix up on their Soundcloud. I’m sitting here listening to it now (thanks Milyoo) and it’s quite the piece of music. It seems the future is very, very bright for Soul Motive.

Just a little 20 minute mix of some of my new material. Lately, I’ve been switching up the BPM’s and the drum patterns, taking things a little lower and running into the realm of atmospheric pads and subtle percussive changes. If i am honest, i am quite enjoying it. I like the challenge of having to deftly carry the listeners interest, instead of just herding them in haphazard fashion down my normal run of large basslines and volatile snares. How well am i doing? Well, take a listen and judge for yourself.

  • The Essence of Cool

    “Cool”.

It is a universal thing, right up there with Coca Cola as being a world recognised entity.  Unlike Coca Cola, “cool” is not a heavily branded and marketed product, rather it’s a description, an indicator and for many, the Holy Grail. Being thought of or described as “cool” is seen as a great positive…beyond it’s application to current temperatures it’s an unremitting and unrelenting phrase used to describe what we like, and what appeals to us.

The interesting thing about the term, and the real crux of the issue, is that while it’s meaning is universal it’s interpretation is entirely individual and incredibly biased.  Each of us has our own tastes, interests, influences and thoughts. Our idea of what is cool is as individual  and unique as we ourselves.  This is not to say that a consensus on cool is impossible, it’s not….but generally speaking the middle ground of cool will only be inhabited briefly and fleetingly in a world driven by the idea that cool is a constant change and state of flux.

What’s cool now, is old school tomorrow. And on Friday, old school will be cool again.  It can all get a little bit confusing in the race to redefine what is cool, so that the redefiner becomes cool by definition. Ouch. Add in the fact that the word itself gets bandied about on a daily basis, and is used to build the value of many things (acts, films, books, fashion) and you entering a heady world where something that used to mean everything is now used to describe anything.

So, with all that in mind, the below tracks are cool. When you hit play, think about what’s cool for you.

    Milyoo – Down To Love

    Drokkr – Melting Footprints

    Evasion – Dream Time

Kid Sader – The Death of Everything Cool

Cage the Elephant – Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked(Rook Remix)

    d-Queue – Swompy Grits

It is almost there, Club Transmediale! With a smashing line-up featuring artist such as Joker, Funckarma, Four Tet and 2562 I’m more than sure that it’s gonna be great!

CTM (club transmediale) is a prominent international festival dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and club culture. Since 1999 it takes place concurrently and cooperatively with the transmediale – international festival for art and digital culture, Berlin.

CTM’s aim is to present the most outstanding international productions in adventurous, experimental and electronic music and audiovisual performance, as well as to reflect recent artistic and technical developments in panels, screenings and presentations.

CTM presents projects that experiment with new aesthetic parameters and new forms of cooperation, develop possibilities for informational and economic self-determination, and reflect on the role of contemporary music against the backdrop of technological and social transformations. Now more than ever, music emerges as a laboratory for multiform experiments and as an active agent that allows for new cultural techniques to be tested and proffered to the wider world. CTM puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction, and thereby emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives.

Only a few days into the year and it’s already being a good one. New songs are getting great reception and I’ve been hit up by more DJ’s and radio shows for tracks to play in the last couple of days than I ever could have hoped. I’ll actually be doing a guest spot on The Welfare Clinic radio show over here in Ireland which goes out across the internet next Wednesday at midnight…the dubbing hour. I’ve line up some really fantastic tracks from a variety of artists, so if you feel like listening in, just go to http://www.raidionalife.com next week!

Now then, on to the new tracks!

    Reservoir Dubs

    Ugmo

    so down low

    Gilgamesh

    Twitchy
