    Wonky Wednesday

Wonky Wednesday is an initiative prompted by the infatigable Charly & Gallus (Antilounge, Dirty Agga Crew, B.A.F,…) in collaboration with our very own DJ Tomlaan (Stripewaves) and the good people of Cafe’ De Vinger in Den Haag.

It’s gonna be an intensive session – Charly & Gallus, Tomlaan, and other DJ’s will be mixing the deepest, chewiest dubstep with the musical phenomenon officiously tagged “stuiterbeats” by Gallus himself (other sources refer to this as “glitch-hop”, others “experimental hiphop”, yet others as “fidget beats” although the latter is closer to the minimal scene).

“Stuiterbeats” is an array of techniques for producing asymmetric incomplete measures: the musical result is a downtempo “stuttering” or rather “limping” rhythmic pattern (technically, the beats would have time signatures like 15/16, or 21/16, or worse).

The decomposition techniques are often applied to hiphop-backbeat-like samples, and I seem to recognize an aesthetic agreement on accentuating the vinyl noise on the beats.

These techniques are being pioneered by artists such as Flying Lotus, Slugabed, Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept, Joker, and to some extent, historically, on some Richard Devine experimental tracks [could someone fill me on this one please?]

Since the weather here is everything but nice I think this is a nice opportunity to share some downtempo and easy-listening tunes. Starting with a nice showcase mix by Crazy Language. This 64 minute mix features artist such as Plerq, Huron and Atmogat. Click on this link for the full playlist.

Randomform – Crazy Language Showcase Mix

I hope your are not to hung over from your yesterday’s Halloween party because there is more! Dj Cez One is a versatile DJ, drummer, and percussionist who has played with many in the Los Angeles area. Sometimes performing live, but mostly creating tweaked-out gems in the hiphop/jungle/electro genres.

    Cez One – Psycho3

Remember Alecek? This guy from Bulgaria produced two new tracks last month, and they are defiantly worth checking out!

    Alecek – Train

    Alecek – Lost Sequence 01

Lets end with a producer from London, Macka. He mainly produces dubstep and is also part of the Mothers Against Noise Collective. I have selected this track because it blended in best with the rest, enjoy!

    Macka – Tube

For more tracks/downloads you can visit his Souncloud.

    Describing music is hard.

It’s not really our fault so much as language itself limits our capacity to reign in the nuance of composed sound.  And it is because of this murky gap between the word and the tones that we often find ourselves reduced to clumsy comparative descriptions (“sounds like a cross between burial and pink floyd”) or knee deep in a thesaurus so we can say “emotive” in 17 affectional, affective, heartwarming, moving, stirring, touching ways.

All this is fine and good.  I mean, without these sorts of contrivances how would Boomkat be able to tell me what to buy?

But skipping this sort of textual excess is what – for me – makes soundcloud so amazing.  Instead of tripping over my words i can just say “so and so is killing it”, drop a link, and wait for you – dear reader – to nod.

So without further ado…. these two artists – Roof Light and Actraiser – are killing it.  top-notch post-garage deepness from both.

    Roof Light

    Actraiser

This is the part where you nod.

    Cheers!

Brainstorm is a creative collaborative group first started in 98 as a sort of mock corporation to produce audio/video/image projects on a very indie scale. In 2003 there was enough material to make http://www.brainstormlab.org and gradually more and more people from different countries wanted to collaborate and contribute. although it’s changed a lot since the beginning the basic concept is always the same – if you don’t have a space to put out your work, make your own.

Below you will find the latest release,  this release is already their 24th.

Dubit – The Three Necks And Sea EP A very warm release, Coming from a minimal techno background with dub influences, Dubit mixes synthesis and foley recordings in this 4 track EP, sifting from soundscapes to dub and slightly more frenetic glitch-based electronica. To hear more from Dubit visit his Myspace The cover is made by illustrator Giuliano Sacco

Of course there is more, most of the release are free to download so I selected my favorite.
