Here is an interview to one of Rotterdam’s foremost pioneers of IDM/Dubstep: Atiq (Guido Van Den Brink), who has agreed to let us release a peek review of his long-awaited collaboration LP with Enk (Pim Arnoldus).

Atiq & EnK – “All Things” (exclusive preview) by stripewaves

“I’ve been producing for about 7 years now, after graduating at the SAE [School of Acoustic Engineering - Rottedam, ed.]. Until that time, I’d been playing in metal bands (turntablist/DJ/samples) which is the scene I know Enk from. He used to play guitar with the band Brainshake and, back then, already used his PC to make music – mostly with the old “Fruity Loops” 3.5.6

SW: Would you care to comment on the present-day music scene in Rotterdam?

Right now there is no scene in Rotterdam. As a matter of fact, there isn’t much of a scene for our style antwhere in NL. Sure, there’s a couple of things happening here and there, but nothing reaches a musically competitive level. Unfortunately, Rotterdam lacks many basic aspects of a music scene; especially now the WATT [Rotterdam's largest electronic music venue, ed.] has filed bankrupcy, there is in fact very little going on in town.

I used to organize events for several years – now I’ve had to put an end to that. It was a financial challenge, and it was way too hard to get audiences to respond to unfamiliar styles. People seem to prefer staying at home.

SW: Musically speaking, what are you into right now?

There are definitely a number of interesting styles i’ve got my ears on. Everything from Instra:Mental and pretty much everything that gets aired on the Club-Autonomic podcast. I am somehow attracted by minimal samples and some sort of 80’s Blade Runner atmosphere [8 bit/Aquacrunk/wonky, ed.]. You have to get into that in order to properly appreciate it, and right now i’m totally hooked, buying piles of records of the stuff.

Moreover, I listen to a lot of Synkro who, in my opinion, is proposing that 2-steppy/garage sound in a very innovative manner. I’m also a big fan of Reso – the man produces “party dubstep” with an uncanny finesse and outstanding care for details. His tracks truly are as structured and varied as a song. I would also flag out Marlow, this guy simply comes up with the sickest basslines.

Besides that, I also dig a lot of quiet music, movie soundtracks, stuff like Burial. My musical taste is rather varied.

SW: How do you go about producing a new track?

We [Atiq-Guido and Enk-Pim, ed.] deem it rather important to develop a personal style, instead of just imitating other tracks. Producing is making something you really think is radically innovative and cool, and if it’s unusual or weird, well, so be it! We find it important to stand up for our inventiveness.

When we come up with a musical idea, we have no preconception whatsoever of the result. We just sit in the studio, fidget around with samples or with some fat-ass beat, and the track very much comes together by itself. We first assemble a looping beat, then develop it and articulate it, etc.

We used to work with Logic 5.5 but nowadays we switched to Fruitystudio and it works fine.

When we publish something we always have it mixed down and mastered at the Mokosound studios – they are the only people we ever allow to touch our music after it has phisically left our studio. Mastering should be left to people who truly are specialized engineers – it definitely is a craft apart. Each time we’re at Mokosound we learn something new – besides, when you’ve been working on a track for a while, you’ve heard it so much your ears are not objective any more.

SW: How is your musical production taking shape for the time being?

We’ve been putting our LP together and it now finally looks like we’re getting somewhere. We really tried to develop our own style and make a strong musical statement. That simply takes a lot of time. On average, we spend about 6 weeks on a single track. Since we both have jobs and we’re not neighbors, we can only meet once a week to produce.

The LP is going to be published by Mindtrick Records [Guido-Atiq's Rotterdam label, ed.] on CDs and 12″. We will also release a videoclip and plan a small release party tour – until now we’ve been focusing on the album rather than getting gigs.

In the meantime, Mindtrick Records will release another 2 single tracks, a downtempo LP by The Eerier Child, and i’ll publish my solo album in October. Plenty to keep Rotterdam busy for a while”.

Hailing from Perth, Australia, Brett Kelly is a genuine talent. Producing under the name of vishnu, calling him a Producer feels like a total understatement. Conjurer comes to mind, or we could even take the route of sounding silly and making up titles to try and get the point across. He writes tracks which invoke some very strong and very compelling journeys through the mind and memories. Mixed cultural hints become malleable emotive and sonic soundscapes…tracks become journeys, sometimes to the inner self and sometimes being thrust outward into a place we’ve never been or even imagined before. Is it odd that when listening to his music i can close my eyes and see myself in a barren desert, the midday sun turning everything below it in a simmering, sweltering melting pot of memories or imagine myself digitised, hurtling through phones lines and modems?

I could go on, but i won’t waste time. Hit play, sit back, be happy.

    vishnu – unison

    vishnu – shared thought

    vishnu – chase the light

  • Soundcloud Drops (2)

Time for some new Soundcloud Drops!

Starting off with two new tracks by Milyoo!

    Milyoo – Rhizomes

    Milyoo – Hauntee

Lets continue with Nilow, Nilow is a Dubstep/Drum n Bass Dj and Producer from Berlin, Germany. Nine years ago he came in contact with Drum n Bass. He immediately loved this massive sound and starting to search for more music with deep and dirty bass lines until he came in contact with Dubstep, resulting in buying turntables to spin some records and later on creating his own productions. Nilow has a nice easy-going sound and besides his own productions he also likes to remix tracks. Below you’ll find one of his remixes, for more tracks please visit his Soundcloud

Edith Piaf – Non je ne Regrette Rien (Nilow Remix)

And there is more. Currently living in Breda, the Netherlands, DisPjutR started making electronic music in a rather silly way. To be precise: somewhere in the summer of 1997 with a friend he covered a pan with some kitchenfoil, and recorded beating it with a pen in windows soundrecorder for later manipulation with said software. From there, DisPjutR started searching the web for music production information and started trying out different music software. Having had no formal education in music production, and no understanding of all the unfamiliar terms, it took a lot of experimenting before getting at creating beats and songs.

Nowadays, he himself describes the music as a mix of Breaks, IDM & Bass. His own favourite musical genres being Drum n Bass, Breakcore, IDM and Dubstep, it is easy to hear most of his inspiration flows from there, but not all! For DisPjutR some inspiration generally comes from things in everyday life. And as he is an avid believer that Music should not have constraints, in any way. I Selected some work which I feel represent more than just one side of his productions, enjoy.

DisPjutR and Bots – Luihi’s Theme

DisPjutR – Stop Hiding Start Wobblin’

    DisPjutr – Killing 1500 Birds

And a bit more to the north we have Rotterdam. Operating from Rotterdam, Kaizoku produces some nice dubstep tracks. Kaizoku is a collabaration between Dr. Fezz, Vivace and Sinus Sawtooth,

    Kaizoku – The Outbreak

    Kaizoku – A Doomed Planet

Lets end with two sets by Factiss, Influenced by Hip hop, Glitch hop, Dubstep and more Factiss mixes his tracks with his laptop and a Vestax VCI300.  Below you will find his latest recordings. These two and more sets are available for download on his Soundcloud.

    Factiss – Bassline Breaky

    Factiss – Mixture

    Describing music is hard.

It’s not really our fault so much as language itself limits our capacity to reign in the nuance of composed sound.  And it is because of this murky gap between the word and the tones that we often find ourselves reduced to clumsy comparative descriptions (“sounds like a cross between burial and pink floyd”) or knee deep in a thesaurus so we can say “emotive” in 17 affectional, affective, heartwarming, moving, stirring, touching ways.

All this is fine and good.  I mean, without these sorts of contrivances how would Boomkat be able to tell me what to buy?

But skipping this sort of textual excess is what – for me – makes soundcloud so amazing.  Instead of tripping over my words i can just say “so and so is killing it”, drop a link, and wait for you – dear reader – to nod.

So without further ado…. these two artists – Roof Light and Actraiser – are killing it.  top-notch post-garage deepness from both.

    Roof Light

    Actraiser

This is the part where you nod.

    Cheers!

    Milyoo

Hereby a short bio about Rob Booth and Electronic Explorations for those who don’t know him yet.

Rob Booth, born in January 1978, Cheltenham, UK but currently living in Ambleside was never keen on the academic side of school, preferring to concentrate on more creative areas such as art, graphic design and of course music.

He soon became known as the guy to go to if you were after the latest music, with “The Raw and The Cooked” by Fine Young Cannibals and Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” among his first purchases – 10 year olds can be excused a lot of things!

Then, one night in 1997, everything turned on its head. A late night/early morning radio show began on Radio 1, known simply as the ‘Breezeblock’ and hosted by a forward-thinking, enthusiastic and driven young lady named Mary Anne Hobbs.

Over the next 30 months Rob stayed up each and every week recording and playing back the shows, discovering new types of music, clubs and scenes that shaped his musical tastes and cemented his love of all things electronic.

On a whim, Rob decided to email Mary Anne Hobbs, and soon after he and Mary were in regular contact. Work at Breezeblock HQ soon followed and Rob got the opportunity to learn first-hand what it took to make the radio show that he’d followed so religiously for all those years.

Now the time has come for Rob to go a step further and start his own show. Electronic Explorations is a weekly 90 minute Download / Podcast show which promises totally exclusive mixes from the cream of the electronic world. Focused on genre’s such as  dubstep, minimal electronica, breakcore, techno and anything else that’s pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

I’ve selected some of my favorite shows below but there is a lot more interesting stuff to listen and download on electronicexplorations.org.
